fans vs other protection

How does a fan protect your crop?

The earth absorbs heat from the sun during the day, and releases it into the colder atmosphere at night. Just before dawn, the heat loss is the greatest, and usually when most frost damage happens.

When the heat is released, it creates a layer of warmer air, about 10-50 metres above the ground. FrostBoss® Frost Fans pull this warmer air down to ground level, and then blow it into the orchard or vineyard.

To protect the crop from the most amount of damage, the air needs to reach the greatest distance possible and the fan needs to blow as much strong, uniform wind as possible.

They automatically turn on before a frost (usually 0.5 to 1.5°C above freezing) and can be set to ideally turn off late, giving far greater protection than traditional methods.

In severe conditions, using orchard heaters in conjunction with frost fans increases how much warmer air can be pulled down and blown across the crop.

“They’ve been outstanding with the area they cover, ease of access to the motor and large 490 litre capacity fuel tanks.

We also had New Zealand Frost Fans upgrade the old alloy blades on our current machines with the FrostBoss® C39 composite blades (3 blade system) and these have proven to be quieter and more efficient.”

“Our customers rely on us for supply and to do what we can to protect hard-won shelf space. In fact, one of our customers helped us buy two of the fans.

Frost fans have seen our average yield increase by 2 tonnes per hectare. We prefer fans over water irrigation, which can jeopardise quality if you’re watering for frost when the vines don’t need it."
